If the software flags a student’s reflection as concerning, the school principal and student services team are alerted, and district staff will decide on the appropriate response, Leia Esser, the district’s executive director of student and staff supports, said in an email.
Responses can include a teacher check-in, family contact, connection with a school mental health provider or community services and other resources.
“If a response suggests an immediate safety concern, staff follow the same safety and crisis response procedures they would use if a concern were shared in person,” Esser said. “Sown to Grow supports identification and communication, but MMSD educators remain responsible for every decision about follow-up.”
