Madison’s latest reduced rigor state test scores

Erin Gretzinger

Last school year, district administrators said, elementary schools experienced stable or decreasing scores in literacy and math, while attendance improved. Middle schools improved across the board. High schools had mixed results in literacy and math scores, with decreases in attendance and graduation rates.

District administrators told School Board members they are evaluating last year’s data and may recalibrate their 2027 goals. Cindy Green, the assistant superintendent of teaching and learning, said the school district will report back to the board this fall about how last year’s results factor into future targets.

“In terms of some of our lagging indicators … we have a lot of room to improve,” Superintendent Joe Gothard said at the meeting. “But the celebration is that there are some schools in there that are beating the odds.”
