But San Francisco’s strike did not occur in a vacuum. 

The California Teachers Association, the powerful statewide union representing teachers, has made no secret of the fact that it is coordinating a statewide campaign — dubbed “We Can’t Wait” — to align teacher strikes in more than two dozen districts, from San Francisco to Los Angeles to Oakland to Berkeley to Sacramento to San Jose.

These strikes are intended to flex the union’s statewide power as it considers who to endorse in the California governor race and as it lobbies the state for more education funding.

California teachers deserve fair wages and benefits. But it’s worth noting they are already the best paid in the nation — despite the state in many instances having worse educational outcomes than poor states like Mississippi.
