In letters sent to residents with their tax bills this year, the city of Madison reported eight area school districts, including the Madison Metropolitan School District as the largest one, accounted for more than half of residents’ tax bill this year. Schools have historically accounted for 42% to 46% of the average tax bill, so the jump to over 50% wasn’t surprising given the referendum approvals, Soldner said.
“Madison is always going to get less from the state, because in the eyes of the state and school funding, we are considered wealthy because Dane County and city of Madison property values are so high compared to the rest of the state,” Soldner said. “But the state really just hasn’t kept up in any shape or form in terms of state dollars to support Madison schools.”
