More on “More Madison Building Referendums on the Way?”

Susan Troller’s article on Madison School Superintendent Art Rainwater’s comments regarding the “eventual need for five new elementary schools” sparked a few comments here, as well as several reader emails, one of which included the March June, 2006 School Board minutes:

It appears that the ‘plan’ was referred to Long Range Planning for additional articulation. The minutes at least put the discussion in context. Note also that Ruth voted against bundling the 3 questions into 1.

  1. Um, Jim…these minutes are relevant, but are from June 2006 (I only WISH I had been able to vote on board policy before the election!!!)

  2. If the School Board’s Long Range Planning Committee does indeed develop a long-range plan for School Board review and approval, which I hope they do, I would like to see involvement from the entire community, as with the previous task forces (including the La Follette attendance area this time). I appreciate the solid, hard work done by community members on last year’s planning task forces and how generous community members were with their personal time.

  3. Jim is correct. I voted against the 3-in-1 referendum. There were no votes on the three questions as separate issues. I voted for using the ballot language recommended by our bond counsel the same evening that I lost the vote on the substance (3 issues in 1). I considered that vote to be a technical vote. Having lost on the 3-to-1, I then was only agreeing that the bond counsel’s proposed language was appropriate. Apparently, the PR people at MMSD count my vote on the ballot language as a vote to go to referendum. I have asked Ken Skye, the public information officer for the district who seems to be writing the press releases, to identify when there was a “unanimous vote for the referendum”. He seems to be ignoring my question.
