Gender Equality Study “Fundamentally Flawed”
Steven Prohaska writes in this letter to the editor:
“WalletHub’s gender equality study — which contrasts workplace environments, education, health and political empowerment for men and women — is fundamentally flawed.
The authors of the study state, “In certain states and for certain metrics where women showed an advantage over men, we treated the state as having gender equality.”
But when one group is better off than another, that’s not equality.
The study ignores substantial disparities in the other direction. Men are disproportionately represented in dangerous jobs, making up over 90% of workplace fatalities. Women now earn more college degrees than men and usually live longer. Most voters are women.
A study’s methodology cannot accurately be described as measuring “equality” if female advantages are scored as equality instead of inequality. A study purporting to assess gender equality should take a more balanced approach to measuring disparities.”
