Madison Edgewood High School, neighbors could agree on major athletic field upgrades

Nicole Pollack:

The school’s football team played just one of its five home games at the field last year, head football coach Jesse Norris said. The team played two games at Breese Stevens Field and two games at other high schools.

Norris said the football team’s successes have come in spite of its ever-changing venue, and he believes upgrading the field will make the team even better. For high school athletes, he said, “having the consistency of a home is key.”

“Athletics are one of the many ways we fulfill our Catholic Dominican mission of educating the whole person,” Edgewood High School president Kevin Rea said in an email. The school, Rea added, seeks to educate students “academically, physically, socially, and spiritually,” and sports bring the community together.

Edgewood wants to build new bleachers that can seat 1,200, with a press box at the top and coaching offices, team and multipurpose rooms and trainer space below. The school’s plans also call for a concession stand, bathrooms, storage sheds, EMS access and a new sound system. Notably, the plans don’t include field lights.
