Civics: Voting sometimes – let them eat cake edition

I’m less interested in the random oysterman than I am in the Democratic Party leadership, what they were up to, and what they are doing now. It’s so much like the story of Joe Biden’s candidacy in 2024. They let the primary process occur, propped the guy up while democracy was in play, let the people expend their power to choose, and then and only then a fatal defect got exposed, and the people’s choice had to withdraw himself. The Party got to insert their candidate, someone who never had to face the test of the primary. I want to hold the Party responsible for what it did. Was it just idiotically searching around for a “masculine” man and infatuated with his oysters? Did it cynically select him and think the people don’t care about sexual misdeeds anymore — the #MeToo era is over and it’s time to go for those “manosphere” votes?

Former Gov. Ralph Northam was appointed to a college board by Gov. Abigail Spanberger this year after refusing to resign in 2019 in the face of party-wide demands in the wake of a blackface/Klan hood picture scandal and another admitted blackface incident. Everyone just shut up and he served a full term. Now, one of the reasons they didn’t force him out is bc their next two in the line of succession were an AG, who also had a blackface scandal, and a Lt. Gov. named Justin Fairfax who had faced sexual assault allegations and fast-forward, just recently murdered his wife. So, maybe Ds in Maine can find someone besides Platner who doesn’t have a racist pic or tattoo and/or violent history with women, but their record thus far not great, and the Virginia Dems don’t offer a template for that.

In the wake of a series of DSA victories in New York City, Jonathan Chait raised the alarm in The Atlantic, writing that as the group has risen in power, it has also grown “more hostile to the [Democratic] party, more illiberal, and more dogmatic.” Long-time DSA members, including former staff member and thought leader David Duhalde and socialist magazine publisher Nathan J. Robinson, pushed back, dismissing Chait as someone who doesn’t know or understand the DSA.
