“The government never had a lawful basis to fire us,” says Nicole Duncan, the chair of the Greater Victoria School Board.
The Greater Victoria School Board’s chair is calling the province’s decision to concede its case against nine trustees who were challenging their firings on Monday “complete vindication.”
“The government never had a lawful basis to fire us,” Nicole Duncan said.
The province’s dispute with the board stemmed from the board’s decision to cancel the school police liaison program in the district. The Education Ministry demanded a school safety plan but said it was unsatisfied with what was submitted.
The trustees had requested a judicial review of their terminations, which was expected to begin on Monday.
Instead, after text exchanges involving a senior Education Ministry official were disclosed to the trustees’ lawyers over the weekend, the province agreed to an order that means the trustees were effectively never fired.
