Reducing administrative staff in Milwaukee

Rory Linnane:

  • About 40 MPS employees will be offered classroom positions, while about 140 can reapply for their jobs, potentially with revised descriptions.
  • The move aims to address teacher vacancies and improve academic outcomes, particularly for underserved students.
  • Cassellius expects to reinvest savings from the restructuring in professional development.

In a move to shrink the administrative central office of Milwaukee Public Schools and send more staff into school buildings, newly appointed MPS Superintendent Brenda Cassellius announced a restructuring plan May 7 that will impact 181 staff as of July 1.

About 40 of the staff will be offered classroom teaching positions, and about 140 could regain their positions after reapplying for them — though some of the job descriptions could look different, as Cassellius wants to move many of them into school-based teams.

Employees who stay with the district will be guaranteed to keep their current salaries in their new jobs for at least one year, Cassellius said.

Wisconsin spends approximately 35 percent more per pupil, yet it achieves worse results

Dale Chu:

School spending is way up, but teacher pay? Not so much. In Los Angeles, spending soared 108% while salaries rose only 5%. What are we really prioritizing: higher pay or more staff? Because we can’t have both.
