Madison’s k-12 food service budget deficits

The latest scratch cooking experiment is part of the district’s effort to correct the food and nutrition department’s budget problems. Those financial woes are mostly due to low participation in school lunch, Perkins previously said.   

Meal participation last school year was 24% below pre-pandemic levels, according to district officials. Chehak said the district has made some progress to increase school lunch participation this school year but the numbers plateaued this winter.
