“This is a major screwup, one that is both politically damaging and legally troubling for Madison’s City Clerk’s Office,” Amato said in an email, noting that the office already is embroiled in investigations and a lawsuit over uncounted ballots in the 2024 election.
“It raises even more red flags about growing incompetence and mismanagement,” Amato said.
The contest between Amato and incumbent Ald. John Guequierre is one of two closely watched council races on the West Side, where residents tend to be more skeptical of city efforts to boost housing density and the $22 million property tax referendum passed in November to stabilize the city budget.
District 19 encompasses most of the city’s West Side, including neighborhoods such as Wexford Village, Parkwood Hills, the Highlands and Spring Harbor.
