STEM to Steam
The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is encouraging Art/Design to be included with the K-20 STEM curriculum.
What is STEAM
In this climate of economic uncertainty, America is once again turning to innovation as the way to ensure a prosperous future. Yet innovation remains tightly coupled with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – the STEM subjects. Art + Design are poised to transform our economy in the 21st century just as science and technology did in the last century.
We need to add Art + Design to the equation — to transform STEM into STEAM.
STEAM is a movement championed by Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and widely adopted by institutions, corporations and individuals.
The objectives of the STEAM movement are to:

  • transform research policy to place Art + Design at the center of STEM
  • encourage integration of Art + Design in K-20 education
  • influence employers to hire artists and designers to drive innovation

  1. So STEM to STEAM what does it really MEAN?
The trouble with connecting these two subjects, I believe is people in general have a hard time seeing the ones and zeros, the visual facts, the black and white, the on and off, of the S.T.E.M fields with the brush strokes, the dance moves, the photographers eye, the composers music, and the graphic designs of the creative minds that bring the science world to life. As an example see how I have brought micro video photography to the science of earthworm researchers. See our YouTube video “Night crawler Science video clips, Worms Micro Videos” I was the first person to prove night crawlers eat live green plants and seedlings.
Without to much effort we can find the “A” for Art and Design meets head on with the STEM fields.
In an effort to bridge the gap between STEM and STEAM we have used the creativity of my modern day family and the age old science of bending wood to create where we combine the art and science of molding wood and additive manufacturing to teach people how to make toys, gifts, arts, crafts and miniature architecture structures such as popsicle stick bridges. We also created and to support the STEM to STEAM theme. Both are start up sites where we can build to for the future. If you would like to talk more you can find me from my site above.
