Civics: 2 Canadian citizens charged with voting illegally in Wisconsin elections

Kimberly Wethal:

Two Canadian citizens have been charged with illegally voting in recent federal elections, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Madison.

Monique Gignac-Yochum, 60, formerly of Hayward, and Robert Dedrick, 66, of Stoughton, have both been charged in federal court for voting in either the November 2022 or November 2024 election, or both. Both made their initial appearances in federal court Thursday.

Gignac-Yochum was charged with two counts for voting in both the 2022 and 2024 elections and faces up to a year in prison if convicted. Dedrick has also been charged with falsely claiming citizenship in August 2024 when registering to vote and then voting in the November 2024 election. If convicted, he could face up to six years in prison.

Both people were charged after investigations conducted by the Department of Homeland Security, a statement from the Western District Court of Wisconsin said.

According to a criminal complaint, Gignac-Yochum has been legally living in the U.S. since 2012 and illegally registered to vote in April 2018. Gignac-Yochum then voted by absentee ballot to the town of Bass Lake, according to voting records from the town and the Wisconsin Elections Commission.

In an interview with a Homeland Security agent, Gignac-Yochum said she had voted in several Wisconsin elections, Chadwick M. Elgersma, the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, said in a statement.
