NYC Chancellor Kamar Samuels chose a prestigious private institution over a public school for his son’s early education.

Susan Edelman:

“When I say public, you say schools!”

NYC schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels rallied his audience at a press conference this month, chanting the rousing line several times.

Samuels himself did not always “say public,” sources confirm.

Never mentioned and missing from his bio, Samuels sent his son to The Browning School, a prestigious private all-boys college prep institution on the Upper East Side, for six years– kindergarten through 5th grade.

Browning’s tuition in 2019-20, when Samuels’ son last attended, was $54,150. This year, it is $68,910.

Educator John A. Browning founded The Browning School in 1888 to instruct John D. Rockefeller and brother Percy. Alumni include Howard Dean, ex-Vermont governor, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., former publisher of the New York Times, and Jamie Dimon, the chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase.

The school for 400-470 students boasts small class sizes, rigorous academics and a focus on character.
