Two Dane County school districts ask voters to raise property taxes
Erin Gretzinger and Will Briggs:
The request translates to $3,600 of annual funding per student over the next four years — a figure district leaders say is the difference between the level of state aid in 2010 and today. In 2022, Middleton-Cross Plains voters approved a $65.5 million operating referendum that spread the funding across four years.
“We asked (the community) for a four-year referendum, our hope being that sensibility would return from the state, and they would fill the gap that they started to take away in 2010,” Hesselbein said. “That has not happened … so what we’re asking our community is to fill that gap once again.”

26.9% of Middleton-Cross Plains’ 4k-3rd grade students scored lower than 75% of the students in the national comparison group compared to Waunakee’s 31.5%.
