Politics and Higher Education: Slotkin Edition

More on lawfare.

Glenn Reynolds:

On Sunday, former President Barack Obama denounced the Trump administration’s investigation of Rep. Ilhan Omar for immigration fraud as un-American.

In America, we don’t go after our political opponents, he said.

This from the man who sent his Internal Revenue Service after Tea Party protesters, and whose running mate, after he became president, treated traditional Catholics, COVID-vaccine skeptics and parents who spoke out at school board meetings as potential terrorists.

Not to mention raiding Donald Trump’s home and sending FBI agents to rifle through Melania’s underwear.

Now Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), speaking at the University of Chicago, is calling for targeted prosecutions of Trump staffers.

Slotkin observed that while Trump has presidential immunity, the people around him do not.

She wants those prosecutions to scare away young conservatives who might want to go into politics.

“I want them to be like, ‘Lord, that might be buying myself a ton of problems I don’t want, and so let me avoid participating in that.’  I want that deterrence message sent.”

——

Rice promised in February that Democrats will punish people, companies and institutions who have “taken a knee to Trump.”

“It’s not going to end well for them.”

“If these corporations think that the Democrats, when they come back in power, are going to play by the old rules…they’ve got another thing coming.”

“There will be an accountability agenda.”

Jonathan Turley:

Slotkin seemed to go full Col. Walter Kurtz in the middle of the interview.

Batya Ungar-Sargon:

“When you weaponize the DOJ against political opponents, it’s a threat to democracy. When we do it, it’s a virtue!” – Elisa Slotkin perfectly lays out the Democrats’ platform.

However, the one thing that EVERY totalitarian regime in world history has had in common is the fact that one of their first official acts after achieving power is to outlaw dissent.

Isaiah Taylor:

When I think of the hundreds of people, young and old, who have put their lives on hold—sacrificing good jobs, foregoing hundreds of hours with their young families—in order to serve their country, and then I watch this from a sitting Senator… absolutely sickening

and:

Imagine growing up seeing the demopublican government uniparty be utterly incompetent for your entire life, unable to build new energy, exporting factories, failing over and over at its ambitions in space, becoming bigger and more bloated and slower year after year until it threatens to eat the entirety of the U.S. economy, with the same geriatric 90 year olds piddling away the future year after year

Then suddenly you have an administration which accepts a flood of young people in government at every level, from the lowest bureaucrats to the halls of the White House…

Elissa Slotkin:

Spare me the pearl-clutching — especially from Republican Members of Congress and online MAGA grifters who have cheered President Trump’s weaponization of the government against those he doesn’t like, as recently as last week. This is a subject I know something about: Less than a year ago, Trump directed the DOJ and FBI to investigate me, and then tried to criminally indict me for a 90 second video, exercising basic free speech. The same free speech you’re exercising now, lying about what I said in this clip. If not for an anonymous group of grand jury members standing up for America’s laws, I’d be criminally indicted for sedition. President Trump has turned the government against people, with raucous support from you and virtually all D.C. Republicans. So spare us the manufactured outrage.

Emily Underwood:

This isn’t what you originally said, to be clear. You said you wanted to use the legal system to bring “signature cases” against Trump officials to dissuade young people from working in the administration, not to, you know, prosecute actual crime.

Chicago Thinker:

Our Senior Editor @MichaelBicksel to @ElissaSlotkin: You said you want young conservatives deterred from serving in government. You should apologize for saying that and set the record straight.

More.

Jeff Clark:

1) This is not our philosophy. I don’t want to penalize young Democrats who serve Democrat politicians. I want to persuade them by the force of our ideas and our fidelity to the Constitution.

2) Slotkin speaks like a Democrat engaged in a psyop against the American people. Just as one would expect a CIA agent turning CIA tools around to apply them inside our nation against the American people would do.
