NYC to Pay for Teacher’s Sex Abuse 57 Years Ago
A Brooklyn jury has ordered the city Department of Education to pay $4.15 million to a 70-year-old man who said a teacher sexually assaulted him in a public school closet at age 13 — a betrayal he kept secret for nearly 57 years.
After a nine-day trial in August, the six-member Kings County panel found the city Department of Education 100% responsible for the abuse by failing to act on prior complaints that the same teacher —a “serial sexual predator” — had molested other boys.
“The school knew about the danger and failed to protect him,” said attorney Jeff Herman, whose law firmrepresents the survivor, Antonio Vargas.
