New Orleans students are leading the nation in reading and math growth as they improve their test scores faster than their peers in Louisiana and across the country, according to a recent nationwide analysis.
Students in Orleans Parish were in the 99th percentile in reading growth and in the 98th percentile for math growth among nearly all districts nationwide from 2022 to 2025, according to the study, which looked at changes in student test scores during that period. Called the Educational Opportunity Project at Stanford University, the study was first released in May and updated with new data this month.
New Orleans students learned nearly 34% more per school year than the national average during that period, according to the analysis, which based that estimate on how much students’ test scores improved from one grade level to the next. Their “learning rate” was well above Louisiana’s statewide rate and higher than in comparable school districts, the study found.
