Colleges Teach Gender and Race. They Ignore Class.

Jon A. Shields:

Colleges, especially selective ones, contribute to class segregation in America by cocooning students in residential campuses that are culturally much like the neighborhoods they’ll one day occupy. That makes it all the more important that students take courses that expose them to the rich social-scientific literature on our growing class divide. Unfortunately, such educational encounters seem to be rare. Students need more opportunities to learn about their fellow citizens; otherwise, we fear that America will remain a mostly foreign country to the next generation of college graduates.
