I recently queued with a soon to be senior at a Madison high school. I relish such brief chats as a glimpse into that world, their observations, desires and community.
Inquiring about classes and interests, I discovered engineering and STEM all around. Terrific. Someone who wants to build. Fantastic.
I further inquired which “ai” bots were used? “Oh, I don’t. I don’t want to use data center energy.” I asked if this student carries an iPhone. Yes, of course. Uses a car? Yes; electricity at home, in school and at the summer job? Yes.
I thanked the student for a fun chat and suggested a dive into the ai world, both for learning and the essential fact that other teens around the globe are accelerating such usage. I am fully aware of the pros and cons of these tools. That said, this is how tech always is. A firm, traditional liberal arts foundation is an ideal place to begin, imho.
