Cumberland School board rejects change to mandate reporting transgender students to parents
In a move that drew praise from advocates calling for protecting transgender youth, the School Committee voted 5-2 against changing its policies to require parental notification.
Many attendees at the July 20 meeting testified for maintaining the protections.
The policy change would have required that parents be informed of their child’s identifying as transgender as long as it is determined that the child is not in danger, and that teachers use the pronouns and gender preferred by parents.
