How Houston teachers found freedom with Montessori school startups

Texas’ growing microschool movement has attracted hundreds of students and families since the COVID-19 pandemic — but it’s also luring teachers with the promise of increased freedom in the classroom and greater flexibility in how they teach. 

After state-appointed superintendent Mike Miles installed his New Education System at many Houston ISD campuses, two teachers at Baker Montessori Elementary felt constrained. They didn’t have as much autonomy as they wanted when implementing Montessori, which prioritizes independence from a young age.
