University of Austin (UATX) is a hot topic after the hit piece by Politico.
My son is in his second term there; his brother(s) will start in the fall. Every single person I’ve met at UATX is more articulate than myself, and certainly more qualified to speak. But if the goal of the piece was to scare off applicants, then I think a parent’s perspective is worthwhile.
TL;DR: If your kid is smart and works hard, send them to UATX. Go tell them to submit their test score. Do it now. It’ll take less than 10 minutes and there’s no downside.
I’ll attempt to explain the upside, probably in excruciating detail. Just do it; they can be friends with mine and you can skip the rest of this long post.
Politico wandered widely; there’s much to respond to. I’ll start with the central claim which seems to be that UATX is “a right-wing project”, is “less concerned about the neutral pursuit of truth” and has “drifted further away from pluralism and toward a more rigid, hard-right orthodoxy.” Nate has more pluralism and less orthodoxy in his friend group than I did at Drexel in 1999. The “My Fellow Liberal”
meme comes to mind…
