Madison school district won’t act on complaints against Van Hise elementary principal

Erin Gretzinger:

Five Van Hise parents spoke with the Cap Times about their concerns, which are informed by their first-hand experiences, complaints shared with them by teachers and incidents they’ve heard from other parents over the past two years.

“When the people that you’re asking to take care of your kids no longer feel safe to escalate concerns and problems, that becomes a huge safety issue,” Robertson told the Cap Times. “My deepest fear is we don’t know what’s happening inside.”

No Van Hise teachers reached by the Cap Times responded to requests for comment

Parents, staff request independent review of Madison Van Hise elementary school principal

Madison taxpayers recently funded the expansion of Van Hise Elementary School (and nearby Hamilton Middle School) despite space in other buildings and their least diverse student population.

27.3% of Van Hise Elementary 4k – 3rd grade students scored below 25% proficiency in the Wisconsin Early Literacy Screener 2024-25 Results.

A score below the 25th percentile means a student scored lower than 75% of the students in the national comparison group.
