Why are we making these mistakes again?
In my previous article, I explained that England’s government seems determined to move away from a set of education policies that have been very successful, and that have attracted significant international attention.
In this post, I am going to explore the issue further. It’s a long post, split into 5 parts, so I’ve added internal hyperlinks here.
Let’s just review the policies that are changing.
There are two proposed policies that are getting a lot of attention. Neither of these has happened yet, and the details of how they will work are sparse.
- Vocational qualifications. The government want to create new vocational qualifications for 14-16 year olds to study, and to incentivise these in league tables.
- Oracy. The government want to increase the status of oracy – better known as speaking and listening – within the English curriculum.
There are two other policies which have already happened. These have not got that much attention, even though they are both pretty significant.
