A closer look at U.Va.’s Class of 2030 — the first undergraduate class since the DOJ deal

Nicolas Biernacki:

The University’s newest class of first-year students stands out in many ways — a record-high 82,087 applications resulted in a record-low 13 percent offer rate. The Class of 2030 is also the first admitted undergraduate class since the University reached a deal with the U.S. Department of Justice in October 2025.

The University’s deal with the Justice Department suspended five federal civil rights investigations under the agreement the University would dissolve its Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and similar programming. Further, the University agreed to remove diversity language from its communications in accordance with federal anti-discrimination law, and it is required to submit quarterly compliance reports detailing its “good-faith efforts” to comply with federal civil-rights law.

According to data from the University’s Institutional Research and Analytics unit, the newest class consists of 847 Asian students and 1,783 White students — 21.4 and 45.1 percent of the class, respectively. There are 375 Hispanic students in the Class of 2030, which is 9.5 percent of the class. Further, the Class of 2030 has 189 African American students, comprising 4.8 percent of the class. This percentage is down from 6.1 percent African American students in the Class of 2029, and down 3.4 percentage points from the Class of 2027 figure of 8.2 percent.

Last year and in years prior, the University reported limited demographic and other information about the newest undergraduate class in the form of an article in U.Va. Today. Last year’s article was published Aug. 25, 2025, and no comparable class profile article has been published for the Class of 2030.

University Spokesperson Bethanie Glover told The Cavalier Daily in a written statement that the types of stories the University publishes about incoming classes change over time.

“U.Va. Today’s coverage strategy is flexible,” Glover wrote. “For the Class of 2030, the U.Va.  Today team shared stories related to Class offers, events to welcome the Class to Grounds, and move-in tips that students and their families might find valuable as they plan their trip.”
