Verona teacher charged with sex assault of student is fired
A Verona teacher charged earlier this month with carrying on a sexual relationship with a former student has been fired, the Verona School District said on Wednesday.
Halla Nelson had been a music teacher at Badger Ridge Middle School and Core Knowledge Charter School. She was placed on unpaid leave on Aug. 31, a day after allegations surfaced that she’d had sex several times with a then-17-year-old male student in 2019.
On Sept. 9, she was charged in Dane County Circuit Court with felony sex assault of a student by school staff.
In a letter Wednesday to school district families, Superintendent Tremayne Clardy and school board President Jen Murphy say the District’s internal investigation into Nelson is complete and “based on the evidence reviewed, the (district) Board of Education concluded that the employment allegations against Ms. Nelson were substantiated and they violated (district) policy.
