Report projects five-year enrollment decline for Monona Grove School District
Enrollment in the Monona Grove School District is projected to decline, according to Sarah Kemp, of the University of Wisconsin Applied Population Lab.
“In five years, you’re looking at anywhere between a little over 3,000 [to] as little as 2,986,” said Kemp, who manages the organization’s School Enrollment Projections Program.
Kemp presented the Lab’s study to the school board on Tuesday, July 14. She reported that the biggest drop-offs are expected at the elementary school level.
In a somewhat related move, the board voted unanimously to add nine new 4-year-old kindergarten spots to its open enrollment offerings for 2026-27.
Overall, Kemp noted that enrollment in the district over the last 10 years rose from 3,069 in 2026-27 to 3,158 in 2025-26 for a 3% increase. This applies only to resident, in-building students, she said.
During that stretch, looking at 4-year-old kindergarten, the numbers were steady, according to Kemp. A 3% decline has occurred in grades 5K to fifth. There was also a slight decrease of 1% at the middle school level, while the high school has seen the most growth with an increase of nearly 19%.
