How will SFUSD pay for the $183 million deal with its teachers?

Jill Tucker

The $183 million deal for the nearly 6,000 educators will increase San Francisco Unified’s annual budget by nearly 15%, with no indication that future local, state or federal revenue will cover the new costs.

Superintendent Maria Su said the district has tentatively agreed to the terms while staying within their financial limits, although “difficult choices remain.”

Even with only the basic information about the deal available, what it means for the district and what happens next can be hard to parse amid all the budget numbers, percentages and complicated terminology as officials highlight the raises, health care and value of teachers amid a sign of relief that the strike is over.

Yet, questions remain. Here the Chronicle has answers for some of the most pressing concerns as the ink dries on the agreement, the picket signs are stashed away and parents prepare for back-to-normal next week.
