Notes on Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers 400 year annual property tax increase

Olivia Herken:

Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Tony Evers cast doubt on repealing a partial veto he made nearly three years ago to increase school funding, a move that has been in the crosshairs of Republican legislators as both sides explore ideas for property tax relief.

When signing the 2023-25 state budget, Evers used his powerful veto authority to increase annual per pupil funding for schools each year until 2425. Republican lawmakers have wanted to repeal the so-called 400-year veto ever since, and when Evers unveiled a legislative plan last week that included a proposal to provide property tax relief to residents, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said he was willing to negotiate, but that first, Evers would need to help repeal that veto.

When asked during an interview with the Cap Times if he had plans to undo the veto, Evers was hesitant, and instead shifted the focus to negotiating property tax relief with Republicans.

“I don’t know,” Evers said. “We need to get more money into the property tax (relief), that will help our schools. I’d like to hear what (Vos) has to say about that personally.”
