Advanced Placement Activity at Madison’s 4 District High Schools

Chris Rickert:

Madison’s four main public high schools have been honored for their students’ high rates of participation and success in Advanced Placement courses, the Madison School District announced Tuesday.

The College Board, which administers AP programs nationally, named West, East, La Follette and Memorial high schools to its “honor roll” based on the percentage of seniors who took at least one AP exam, earned a score of 3 or higher on an AP exam, and took five or more AP exams during high school, including at least one in ninth or 10th grade.

“This is a meaningful milestone for our district,” Tim Peterson, district director of assessment, said in a news release. “Having all four comprehensive high schools earn a place on the AP School Honor Roll at the same time speaks to years of intentional work to expand access, encourage participation and support students once they’re enrolled in these courses.”

More than 2,000 students completed more than 4,500 AP exams districtwide last spring, the district said in the news release. More than 80% of those exams received a score of 3 or higher on a 5-point scale, it said.
