The total has been growing an astonishing rate. According to the department’s Office of the Historian, there were 6,850 career officers in 1980 – roughly the same number as when my friend enlisted. Today, however, there are 15,600 – 127% more than there were 45 years ago. But the number of countries in the world has changed little.
