The Universities of Wisconsin spent $40.2 million on offices that relate in some way to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts during the 2023-24 school year, the Legislature’s Audit Bureau said Friday.
But UW system leaders say those numbers are not only “old and cold,” since they’re based on May 2024 statistics, but they are also overly broad in scope.
The Legislative Audit Bureau’s report looked at diversity, equity and inclusion spending at both the UW system and elsewhere in the executive branch of state government. In both cases, the legislative audit bureau had to estimate amounts the agencies spent on diversity efforts because agencies did not track those costs themselves.
Compared to other agencies, UW system had the most robust set of programs and initiatives relating to DEI practices.
