Minnesota’s St. Paul Children’s Campus will soon close one of the eastern subway’s only pediatric intensive care units, even as the same hospital prepares to add a new 22-bed inpatient mental health unit for children aged 5 to 18.
Children’s Minnesota – which was established in the capital in 1924 – manages some 380 beds between the St. Paul and Minneapolis sites of its nonprofit hospitals. These hospitals and their state-wide network of clinics, specialty care, and rehabilitation sites form one of the largest stand-alone pediatric health systems in the country, and fundamental changes are underway as that system. is approaching the century.
