February 7, 2012Tepid response to Nerad's plan to close achievement gap in Madison school district; $105,600,000 over 5 YearsMadison school superintendent Dan Nerad unveiled his long awaited, and much anticipated plan (mp3 audio) to close the district's more than 40-year-old racial achievement gap Monday night before the full school board and around 75 citizens who packed into a room inside the Fitchburg library.Ideally, substantive program review in necessities such as reading and math would occur prior to the addition of new spending. Matthew DeFour helpfully puts dollars ($105,600,000 over 5 years, about 5.6% of the roughly $1,860,000,000 that the District will spend over the same period) to the proposal. How does that compare with current programs and the proposed the proposed Madison Preparatory IB charter school? A new rearrangement of the deck chairs. Nothing more than that. Posted by: Ed Blume at February 7, 2012 2:47 PMMy reaction to the Nerad speech is not tepid, but is pretty much the same as my reaction to reading that an experiment in Europe showed that neutrinos traveled faster than predicted by Einstein's theory. It's a proposed step to trying to close the gap. The document must be reviewed and detailed. The theory may not work out in practice, but at what point has anyone's promises and practices comported with reality on the ground? Posted by: Larry Winkler at February 7, 2012 7:08 PMPost a comment
