Students have all the right moves at Middleton's Northside Elementary

Pamela Cotant:

When a teacher at Northside Elementary School taught students chess as part of a math enrichment class years ago, she was impressed by how much they enjoyed it.

"They just really ate it up so we decided to do this after-school club," said teacher Barb Snell.

The weekly Chess Club, which was started about 10 years ago, grew to some 75 students. So this year it was offered to just fourth- and fifth-graders, bringing the number down to 40.

"It works your brain a lot, and it's fun," said fourth-grader Cami Spellman, who also was in the club last year.

Snell, a fourth-grade teacher at Northside, is no longer the chess club adviser.

Fourth-grade teacher Amy Weber, who took over advising the club and who also teaches gifted and talented students at another school, said the club is designed to offer a challenging activity for gifted and talented students, but there are no criteria for joining the club other than being in fourth or fifth grade.
