How Safe is Your High School? Madison West

Channel3000:

The police data on the school shows a mixed record. In the past three and a half years, Madison West ranks first among the other city schools in bomb threats, property damage and fights.
However, it also has the fewest number of drug incidents and weapons violations.
Overall, West High School has the lowest crime rate.
School principal Ed Holmes, who is in his second year, said that he wants it even lower.
He said that it’s one reason that he’s completely reshaped the school day with a revolutionary overhaul of the lunch schedule.

  1. I am assuming that all of these numbers that Channel 3000 is reporting are incidents that occur on school grounds only. Does anyone know, for a fact, if that’s true? Or not? It’s an important point — when trying to understand what’s really going on at West, at least — because of the rash of break-ins in the neighborhoods surounding West this year. I guess what I’m asking is, if a West student “breaks and enters” a home on, for example, Virginia Terrace during school hours, does that incident appear in the data being reported? If so, then this is heartening news. If not, then the data are somewhat artificial and misleading and I think we need a way to include incidents like that in the analysis to get a more accurate picture of what’s going on.
